I often wonder whether we, as Masons, don't take ourselves a little too seriously.
We meet as a rule once a month. We see and hear the working of the Lodge, more or less strictly according to the ritual, time after time, month after month, year after year.
We adjourn, solemnly, to what we call the "festive board." We eat, drink, and instead of making merry we listen to the speeches.
Then we break up and go home, wondering why Lodge attendances are so small.
