The idea of this paper was given me many years ago by an eminent member of this Lodge when proposing the toast of an initiate.
During his toast he very much surprised me by telling the initiate that, although during the ceremony he had been told that Freemasonry had existed from time immemorial, this was not so, and that actually it had existed only about 200 years.
And I have heard many other learned brethren make like statements.
