Every enthusiastic Mason is naturally desirous to know something of the
origin and history of the Craft.
However, a heavy curtain hangs between the 17th century and those earlier ages which must have seen its beginnings.
One of the first things to strike the inquisitive, earnest initiate is the intermingling in our ritual and customs of facts and fiction, of tradition and sacred history.
More able brethren have been unable to draw aside this curtain; therefore, I cannot expect to open possible avenues of research and to stimulate the spirit of inquiry.
It will be my endeavour in this paper to show that Masonry is a mystery religion, sounding a note which is distinctive, and that it is the most ancient and authoritative of the mysteries.
