The Masonic history of New Zealand is a very interesting one and a brief mention of early years is essential to give a complete picture of the situation that brought about the establishment of the Grand Lodge.
From this gathering must have come the desire for a Lodge to be formed, and eventually an application was made to the old Irish Lodge at Sydney, The Australian Social Lodge, No. 260 I.C., which issued a dispensation, on the 5th September 1842, to the brethren at Auckland to form a Lodge.
