This title is somewhat vague. I shall attempt this evening to deal with that part of the South Seas with which I am conversant, those groups of islands which are usually called Melanesia; of Polynesia further east, and Micronesia further north I know nothing. Melanesia is the name given to those groups of islands which, beginning with New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, and the New Hebrides, start from a point north of Norfolk Island and extend in a northerly direction to about 10 degrees south of the Line. Thence, after travelling somewhat to the north of west for about 280 miles, we come to the group of large islands which are called the Solomons, which stretch, roughly speaking, from S.E. to N.W. to a point considerably north of, and, so to speak, overlapping New Guinea.
