Nothing is definitely known about the origin of Freemasonry but many believe that it originated from the ancient Egyptian religions.
What we do know for certain is that Guilds or groups of craftsmen have existed from very early periods in our civilisation. We can safely presume that builders, carpenters and blacksmiths would form into Guilds and that from those Guilds came the origin of Freemasonry.
By the Middle Ages the Guilds had become very well organised and were a powerful factor in the life of the community.
