The Grand Lodge of England was the Mother of every other Grand Lodge and was constituted on St. John the Baptist Day 1717, by members of four or more old Lodges in London, Anthony Sayers, Gentleman, being installed Grand Master.
In England there are no Grand Lodge records earlier than 1723, that is Anderson's constitutions, and it is difficult to say what degrees there were at the time the Grand Lodge was constituted. In Scotland there are earlier fragments of records of operative Lodges during the 15th, 16th and
17th centuries from which we are able to reconstruct to some extent the conduct of Lodges both in England and Scotland.
