As an Entered Apprentice, I was perplexed by the state of things as I then perceived them. It seemed that Scottish lodges worked their own ritual, while everyone else worked the same ritual as each other. This made little sense to me.
These alternate rituals were either legitimate or not, and if they were, why couldn’t any lodge work them if they chose?
I was later informed by more experienced brethren that not all Scottish lodges were allowed to keep their ritual; only those who managed to successfully argue their case.
Even those who did keep their ritual had lost many of their established usages and customs, and lived in fear of losing more.
I was also told that we worked an English ritual, and that no Irish lodges were working their original ritual.
