From the Masonic point of view there are two outstanding features in connection with the Winding Stair.
First, that no one below the rank of F.C. was permitted to ascend.
Second, that the F.C. used it as a means of access to his wages.
What, therefore, in the first place are the characteristics of a Fellow Craft?
1. As soon as he is accorded the outward and visible sign of his admission to that degree he is told that it is necessary for the proper performance of his duties that he should study the Liberal Arts and Sciences,
2. He is told that having made himself acquainted with the principles of moral truth and science, he is in a position to extend his researches into the hidden mysteries
of Nature and Science.
3. When he claims advancement as a reward for the proper performance of his duties he states that the peculiar object of the research that he as a Fellow Craft has undertaken was " The Hidden Mysteries of Nature and Science."
