The real meaning and character of Myth may be studied from the Indian Vedas of about 2,000 B.C., for in them the writers do not aim merely to display their literary skill in florid, ingenious and subtle enquiries and expressions, such as are found in the classical Sanskrit of the Ramayana and the Puranas of the first Christian centuries, but in the simple and direct language of Sanskrit while it was still a living speech.
Their supreme concern was to impart knowledge that was necessary to the community. Myth seldom makes a good narrative, for it is a record of custom, and custom offers little scope for descriptive treatment.
