The mental faculties of persons over ninety years of age are not infrequently impaired and their memories play tricks not suspected in the normal younger person.
For this reason information received from these old Masons must be checked and thoroughly tested to be sure that all is at it seems.
This process develops into a letter-writing orgy to friends, relatives, lodge secretaries and Grand Lodge secretaries, and finally, in many cases, a perusal of Grand Lodge Proceedings of seventy to eighty years ago items not found in many Masonic libraries.
All in all, I have been fortunate in having the aid of many individuals who, upon my inquiries, also became interested in my research, as well as Masonic librarians in those libraries in the United States possessing fine sets of Grand Lodge Proceedings, i.e., the Grand Lodges of Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and the Supreme Council, A.A.S. Rite, Washington, D.C. — all these helps, I gratefully acknowledge.
