The only complete and reliable work on the subject is the two-volume History of the Cryptic Rite, by Eugene E. Hinman, Ray V. Denslow and Charles C Hunt, prepared for the General Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of U.S.A., authorised in 1918, completed in 1930, and published in 1931.
This represents 12 years' research and is a monumental work.
The history of the Cryptic Rite is obscure, and the authors have based their conclusions on the evidence available.
