The Order of Freemasonry is one of the oldest societies in the British Empire; it is without doubt the one Society that all British people acknowledge as being without a compeer, for, when discussing the status of the various organisations, one invariably finds that, although the parties discussing the subject know very little about it, they will yet maintain with great confidence that Freemasonry is at the head of them all, and, of course, no Freemason will admit the right of any other Order to precedence.
