Now " Democracy" may be defined as " That which insists on equal rights and privileges for all," or, in political science, "That form of Government in which the people rules itself either directly, or through representatives whom the people elect.

The word is derived fron the Greek-démos: the people, and krateo: I rule.

Its origin lay in the principles of local self-government, as opposed to social and political aristocracy established as rulers: It is a form of government in which the power rests with the body of the citizens; that is, with the majority of them.
