Modern Freemasonry is first recorded in Germany in 1733. One Lodge, formed in Hamburg in 1737, held a special communication in Brunswick in 1738 for the express purpose of initiating a certain 26 year old Frederick.
When he acceded to the throne of Prussia as Frederick the Great (1712-1786) two years later, he openly declared himself to be a Freemason.
