In most Victorian Lodges up to the 1930’s the Director of Ceremony still carried a wand, a heritage from the English Lodges that formed the United Grand Lodge of Victoria. And interestingly until 1918-19 whenever the Deacons crossed their wands over a candidate, during the various degree ceremonies, the Director of Ceremonies, standing behind the candidate, placed
his wand in the “V” of the Deacons’ crossed wands thus forming a tripod (still practised in some masonic orders).
