Although Southern Star Lodge was not formed until 1853, the first meeting of freemasons in Nelson was probably held in May 1842 when a meeting of freemasons was advertised in the Colonist to be held in the Freemasons Tavern, an appropriately named hostelry situated on the North East corner of Trafalgar and Bridge Streets. The meeting was to consider the formation of a lodge, but nothing appears to have resulted from it.
