Freedom is never an end in itself, either for an individual or for a nation.
It must be directed along paths that throw up challenges, tests of our moral fibre and stimuli to our ethical conscience as a moral fibre. It cannot be won without implicit trust between people; it demands the dismantling of superficial barriers, whether ethnic, religious, cultural or social.
