Following details have been recorded concerning Macquarie's association with Freemasonry.
1. Macquarie's Journal(1), p. 208, dated January 16, 1793, has the entry "Wednesday I had the honor to be inititated (sic) a Free-Mason; and to be initiated in the Mysteries of that honourable and worshipful Society - in Lodge No. 1; whereof the Worshipful John De Ponthiew Esq is Master. - Dr. (?) Jn. (?) Shaw was made the same Night - both of us being introduced by the Revd. Mr. Nick: Wade."
