In a way I feel I'm cheating a little with this paper.
I cannot admit to it being specially prepared for the Research Lodge since it was put together as a somewhat scratchy reply to a batch of correspondence penned by an enthusiastic Brother living in retirement in the country. He had commenced writing a book concerning his pilgrimage to, and in, Masonry. In his research for it, he came across that small pamphlet published by the United Grand Lodge of N.S.W. entitled "Some Facts Concerning Freemasonry" and, under the heading of "What it is not", the words "Freemasonry is not a religion or a religious order though its ceremonies have a religious character".
He disputed this statement, claiming it was religious and a religion.
