Contrary to gild practice, personnel of the medieval craft from which Speculative Freemasonry evolved was wholly male.
In continuance of the same tradition Speculative Freemasonry remains an association of men only.
This tradition does not aim to degrade women. Indeed, equally traditionally, the Masonic ethos honours women (witness the part of the Queen of Sheba in Masonic legend).
Also it specifically recognizes the responsibilities of Freemasons in respect of their women folk.
In many jurisdictions, if not all, women play an important part in the social and charitable activities of Lodges.
