During the month of February, 1717, four Lodges held a joint meeting in the Apple Tree Tavern and
decided to hold an Annual Convention and Feast on St. John's Day.
Accordingly, on that day, the 24th June another combined meeting was held in the Goose and Gridiron Tavern, when those Lodges constituted themselves into a Grand Lodge and elected Bro. Anthony Sayers their first Grand Master.
The following year daughter Lodges were founded, and, in order that these Lodges might have some
documentary evidence that they were recognised as regular Lodges by the Grand Lodge of England, they were supplied with a Warrant. But no Warrant was issued to the four original Lodges, and two of those, the Lodge of Antiquity, No. 2, and the Royal Somerset House and Inverness Lodge, No. 4, still meet in London without a Warrant.
They work under what are termed the " Immemorial Constitutions."
