To keep this paper within reasonable bounds, I intend to use as an illustration of this method the ritual of only one society, the Hung Society, and for this purpose I have drawn freely from the monumental work of Ward and Stirling, whose book is a complete compilation of the Ritual and a searching analysis of every aspect and phase of the society.
In order to avoid misunderstanding, let me again state that although in the course of the paper there will appear similarities to our Ritual, more marked even to the Rituals of our higher degrees, there is no attempt here to trace any connection of our Ritual to that of the Hung Society.
The purpose of this paper is purely to elucidate their landmarks.
