The Compagnonnage was the name given to an association of French Journeymen.
It was originally restricted to the four building trades — the stonemasons, carpenters, joiners, and locksmiths — but it kept on expanding till it included almost every craft of importance in the country.
It regulated everything connected with the journeyman's travels along a prescribed itinerary known as the " Tour de France," and came, in later times, to exercise an absolute control over labour.
