The main portion of this work, The Antiquities of the Jews," appears to have been written as a support of the Jews during their settlement among the Greeks and Romans, after the destruction of their country.
" The Wars of the Jews," the first work of the writer, is a description of the political events up to and covering the war with the Romans and the destruction of Jerusalem. In the Preface to the Antiquities is given a short treatise or theory on the writing of histories, and, if we can take this as a basis upon which his writings were conducted, we can feel that throughout the long story there was some effort to conform to facts and truths as they were available to the writer.
