Smoke impression of the Seal of Lodge Clonakilty, Co. Cork, Ireland, and was used by that Lodge for its Royal Arch Certificates when, prior to the year 1829, the Degree was conferred by Craft Lodges under the solo authority of the Craft Warrant.
The letters round the seal are intended to read : "Royal Arch) E(xcellent) S(uper) E(xcellent) Lodge No. 385 Clonakilty."
At the time this Seal was used (and for many years before 1829) the Royal Arch Degree in Ireland consisted of three parts or Degrees, viz. : the Excellent, the Super Excellent, and the Royal Arch. The Excellent and Super Excellent Degrees are now incorporated in what is often termed the " Passing of the Veils," which, while not actually part of the Royal Arch Degree, Candidates, under some Constitutions, are given the Excellent Masters Degree, or go through the ceremony of Passing the Veils as a preliminary to it.
