Those of us who cannot believe that Freemasonry originated in 1717 and are not altogether
satisfied with the material qualification that Freemasonry in its present form originated in 1717, fall back on the statement " Freemasonry is the spiritual successor of the Ancient Mysteries."
It is a comforting expression but what exactly does it mean ?
It is to answer that question that I submit for your consideration, criticism and assistance in its evaluation a theory which I cannot express adequately in words but only by implication.
My theory is based on three grounds, two of which are definitely accepted by all Masons but the third is possibly open to controversy, at any rate when one tries to express it in concrete terms. These grounds are :—
1. Belief in God.
2. Belief that God has a definite purpose in the Universe.
3. Belief that this purpose is revealed to men in such degree as their development may enable them to grasp.
This third belief is the interpretation placed upon the general statement that " He has never left Himself without a living witness among men."
