The words " ear of wheat," locally, appear to evoke the name " Farrer," for nearly everyone who has made reference to the title of this lecture has recommended the invaluable work of that benefactor to my notice.
It frequently happens that, through misapplication or ignorance, a word, in the course of time, comes to convey an entirely wrong impression.
Such a word is " mystic."
The average person is apt to recoil from association with anything which appears to be mystic or have a mystical tendency.
In the present state of our intellectual development such an attitude can only arise from a misapprehension of the real meaning of mysticism.
