The purpose of this short paper is to present to your notice the fact that there does exist evidence that some twenty centuries ago certain symbols were adapted to spell out an allegorical lesson in very much the same manner as we Masons employ their counterpart at the present day. This evidence consists of a very remarkable Mosiac, about a foot square which was brought back to the light of day as the result of the labour of those scientists who were engaged on excavations at Pompeii in 1874.
As is well known, the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were permanently destroyed, or buried, by the great eruption of Vesuvius on 23rd August, A. D. 79.
