We do not know, we can only reason by analogy, guided by such knowledge as we possess of physico-chemical laws, and of universal natural phenomena generally.
We might reject the idea that possibly life, like matter, energy and ether existed from the beginning, also that life was carried to the earth from outer space by the agency of light pressure, or on a meteorite. Therefore, we can safely say that life as we know it originated on the earth, either it was evolved from non-living matter, or it was the result of a special creation.
The latter hypothesis withholds or limits discussion, as it passes into the regions of the incomprehensible and mystic, and any unsolved problem could be explained in the same
way, and oppose any real search for knowledge.
