Before ever I went to British Columbia many years ago, I was aware that Vancouver was the first Dutch settler who founded the city and gave it his own cognomen.
Excepting that he wasn't a Dutchman, nor a settler, nor dreamed of the city, my information might be of average accuracy.
Lest any of us fall into slight errors of the kind it may here be mentioned that George Vancouver was an English naval Captain, who had been with the great navigator James Cook upon his memorable expedition in 1778, when the latter made his first discovery of the Alaskan coast near the present site of Sitka.
