The Walls of Constantinople are a system of defensive walls built of limestone and brick that have surrounded and protected the city of Constantinople (today Istanbul in Turkey) since its founding as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine the Great, although some walls existed before that time.
With numerous additions and modifications during their history, they were amongst the last great fortification systems of antiquity and one of the most complex and elaborate systems ever built.
