Otago in 1863 was ideally suited for the establishment and growth of a Scottish masonic lodge. At 66%, Otago had the highest ratio of men to women in the country, and would have had more than the national average of 18% of those of European stock having been born in Scotland (24% born in N.Z.) Otago in 1864 had a European population of 49,019, well ahead of the next largest province, Auckland with 42, l 32.
The Statistics Dept. report of 1864 records that the North Island had 37.9% of the European population, and t he "Middle Island" had 62.170.
