Recently, the minute books of Sphinx Lodge became available for perusal; previous to this only brief mention had been made of this Lodge's activities in Japan by Brothers J R Black, A R Catto, N O A Peck and C Haffner.
Sphinx Lodge was warranted by the Grand Lodge of Ireland on October 6, 1860 and attached to the Second Battalion, Twentieth Regiment of Foot, which served in India, China, Japan, South Africa and Mauritius.
For purposes of brevity only a brief overview of the Lodge's activities from 1864 to 1866 will be considered.
After arriving in Japan in 1864, the Lodge did not meet for several months due to the lack of a suitable room.
