The Temple of King Solomon as we have learned to know it was a structure of unsurpassed magnificence.
Encompassed with frightful precipices, it was surrounded by a wall of
great height, exceeding in its lowest part 450 feet, and constructed entirely of white marble.
It was surrounded by courts, the first for the Gentiles, the second for the Children of Israel, both men and women, and a third for the priests.
From this, steps led to the Temple proper, consisting of the porch, the sanctuary, and the Holy of Holies—the first entered through a gate of brass, while the sanctuary was approached through a portal furnished with a magnificent veil of many colours and the Holy of Holies by doors of olive, richly sculptured, inlaid with gold, and covered with veils of blue, purple, scarlet and finest linen.
