Great teachers in all ages, pagan and Christian, have sought to impress on the minds of their votaries the lessons of life by means of signs and symbols, objects familiar to them and entering into their ordinary pursuits.
So the framers of the ceremonies of the Craft have from time immemorial by like means endeavoured to instil in the mind of the neophyte in our mysteries the duty he owes his fellow men and the valuable truths and lessons leading him to a full knowledge of the Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man, and the duty we owe one another, by a symbolism embracing objects familiar to him in his daily walks through life, applying them as incentives to higher thoughts, to nobler deeds, to greater achievements.
