Freemasonry as an organization does not engage in political or religious activity and indeed forbids such discussion within a Lodge.1 Nevertheless, the events that occurred in Ireland during the 18th Century cast a long shadow within the Craft.
The development of Freemasonry in eland coincided with a period of intense political turmoil and upheaval.
It would not be surprising therefore to find that some Freemasons, as individuals, were caught up in the political dramas of the time.
This paper briefly examines the history of Freemasonry in Ireland during this volatile period. It discusses the involvement of some of the brethren who were actively engaged in the failure that was the 1798 Rebellion which led to the Act of Union of 1801.
