Our Masonic ceremonies are enactments of moral dramas that use symbols and prose to teach Candidates (and other masons watching and listening) the lessons embedded in each Masonic degree.
To preserve consistency and prevent error and unintentional change in the delivery of our ceremonies, the actions and story related in each moral drama are expressed in words laid down in our ritual books.
Masons often learn the words by rote in order to take part in the ceremony, but as we all know, there is a danger in this if no real understanding of the words and phrases ensues.
