In theory, Freemasonry acknowledges no colour bar, but opens its doors to ‘just, upright and free men of mature age, sound judgement and strict morals’, regardless of race, colour or creed, provided they
believe in the Supreme Being.
In practice, this has not always been so, and is not so today. In the United States of America a system of segregation developed and has been maintained for over 200 years.
From time to time isolated and unsuccessful attempts were made to change this situation. Now a more determined effort has been initiated and is gathering momentum.
The acknowledged goal is not complete integration but mutual recognition and intervisitation.
