Freemasonry first came to Hawke's Bay on the 15th of October 1769 in the person of Bro Joseph Banks of Old Horne Lodge No 4, the scientist on board HMS Endeavour.
Far from forming the first Lodge in Hawke's Bay, the crew of Endeavour had an altercation with local Maori who attempted to kidnap the Tahitian navigator Tupaia's servant Tayeto, believing that the boy was being held captive on board Endeavour.
Shots were fired.
There were Maori casualties.
It was to be another 88 years before the flame of Freemasonry was kindled in Hawke's Bay.
The scene is set in Celebration of Centenary, written for Scinde Lodge's centenary in 1958.
