The first Masonic badge we were all invested with was our Entered Apprentice apron.
What is its origin? The Freemason's Apron is derived from the leather apron worn by operative Masons of the Middle Ages, as a means of protection for their clothes and themselves.
In the early days of speculative Masonry in England, the apron was much larger than that worn today.
Early prints show the apron to be long - almost to the ankles - and it was fastened by two thongs passed around the waist and tied in front. It also had a bib at the top which could be buttoned or tied over the chest.
