In Ancient Egypt the God whose death and resurrection were annually celebrated wtih alternate sorrow and joy was Osiris, the most popular of all Egyptian deities. Through long ages his devoted worshippers heaped upon him the powers and attributes of many other Gods, concealing his primitive simplicity.
The story of Osiris is told only in connected form by Plutarch, whose narration has been confirmed and supplemented by the discovery in 1880, of the pyramid texts. The oldest monuments which illustrate ie myth or legend, are a long series of prayers, incantations and liturgies engraved in heiroglyphics on the walls, passages and galleries of the fine pyramids at Sakkara. From the location of their discovery they are known as The Pyramid Texts.
