This is a description of Freemasonry which has now fallen into disuse as being archaic and not understandable to modern men. When the description is modernized to “A particular system of Morality,
its meaning hidden in words but shown symbolically”, it is still an accurate description of the Craft.
Another quote which is frequently used is that Freemasonry “takes good men and makes them better”.
Again this is an accurate description of the Goals of the movement.
The only way this can be achieved is by revealing to those good men an understanding of those hidden meanings and symbols.
