Symbolism is the use of symbols, not merely those of the figures of speech but those of all language, since the word symbolizes the idea, and the idea symbolizes the thing.
Any word has invariably at least two meanings, one of which is more remote and archaic than the other. The word “spirit” used in the religious sense, has not now as it once had, the meaning “breath”.
